Rochester, Mich. – Oct. 8, 2015 – Are you confident your children or the people you have entrusted to manage your affairs when the time comes possess the necessary knowledge to handle the task? Between trying to minimize taxes, filing tax forms and keeping track of other important documents, Scott McGovern, CPA and partner at Mattina, Kent & Gibbons, P.C. (MKG), a Michigan-based CPA firm providing audit, accounting, tax and business consulting services to a variety of industries, said estate planning can sometimes be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be.

“While preparation is important, it is also imperative that the people handling one’s affairs have the information they need to carry out the individual’s wishes,” McGovern explained. “This knowledge will ensure that assets are rightfully allocated to heirs instead of the state.”

Accordingly, MKG, along with The Athena Financial Group, are co-sponsoring “Train Your Trustees: Estate Planning for Families.” The workshop will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. at the Rochester Community House, 816 Ludlow, Rochester Municipal Park. Light refreshments will be provided.

Diane Young, president of The Athena Financial Group, said the session will cover how to administer a trust, avoid common mistakes, and facilitate important discussions with the people handling one’s affairs.

“The workshop is geared toward parents and the adult children who will be handling their affairs as they age or when they pass on,” Young said. “Many people are surprised by how much work goes into managing an estate, even a small one.”

In addition to McGovern and Young, Sam Gumma, Vice-President, American Funds, will present at the workshop. Topics that will be covered in the workshop include:
• What tax forms need to be filed
• What duties are required
• How to keep track of documents
• Filing deadlines
• How to write a family love letter
• How to minimize taxes
• How to create clarity from confusion

There is no charge to attend, but reservations are required. For more information or to RSVP, contact Stephanie at 248.453.5252 or Kathy at 248.601.9500.
