Rochester, Mich.––April 26, 2018––Dental patients now have an alternative to surgical grafting with stitches to treat their receding gums, according to Kurt Doolin, D.D.S., founding partner at Doolin Haddad Advanced Dentistry—a Rochester, Michigan, dental practice focusing on cosmetic, implant, TMJ and restorative dentistry. The less invasive and more comfortable way to treat gum tissue recession and tooth root exposure is called the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST™). This relatively new, less painful approach can treat many patients’ gum recession more quickly and effectively than the surgical grafting procedures of the past.

Dr. Kurt Doolin, who is certified to perform the pinhole procedure, said that gum recession is a common and serious dental problem because the margin of the gum tissue surrounding the teeth moves away, exposing more of the root, which can be painful and lead to the eventual loss of the tooth. The gum tissue loss is the visible result of underlying loss of the supporting bone. This bone and tissue loss is most often caused by gum disease and the long-term effects of a traumatic bite.

Traditional root coverage surgery involves removing tissue from the roof of the mouth and using it to cover the exposed roots. This two-site surgery is effective, but commonly produces significant discomfort for the patient, according to Dr. Doolin.

He contrasts that with the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique, where no sutures are required. In this procedure, the gum tissue in the treatment area is gently released from the underlying bone through the pinhole, allowing it to be shifted to the desirable position over the tooth roots. A collagen material is then introduced through the same pinhole, which stabilizes the newly repositioned tissue and allows healing. The process is completed in a single visit.

“We have found that our patients have experienced less discomfort and swelling using the pinhole technique, and the healing time is shorter than with the previous approach,” Dr. Doolin said.

When considering this technique, Dr. Doolin points out that pinhole gum rejuvenation requires specific training, instrumentation and certification from its creator, Dr. John Chao. It is an advanced technique that should be performed only by a trained and experienced dentist.
