Wyandotte, Mich. — October 7, 2022 — On Monday, October 10, Michigan Legacy Credit Union (MLCU) will join its credit union colleagues throughout the state to participate in the inaugural CU Kind Day, a day hosted by the Michigan Credit Union League to showcase the credit union difference that credit unions make by donations, volunteerism and community and educational support throughout the year. Carma Peters, President and CEO of Michigan Legacy Credit Union, is pleased to support CU Kind Day through MLCU’s meaningful donation to Turning Point, a Macomb County-based organization that provides support services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and their families.
For CU Kind Day, Michigan Legacy is creating 10 new individual accounts and depositing an initial amount of $250 to help survivors start an emergency fund as they transition out of Turning Point’s shelters. The donation marks the continuing relationship between the two organizations that began earlier this year when Michigan Legacy made a $50,000 donation to Turning Point.
“With this donation, the aim is to help survivors feel a sense of financial security by kickstarting an emergency fund,” Peters said. “Plus, if survivors maintain a balance of $250 or more for a year, we will deposit another $250 into their account one year from now.”
The timing of the $2,500 initial donation, which can grow to a $5,000 donation, coincides with Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is being observed throughout October. Respecting the right to financial privacy and the survivor’s safety, MLCU will utilize its video banking services to assist the survivors in opening an account remotely. With the ability to do all non-cash transactions online or through the video branch, survivors can also bank with MLCU safely and without driving to a branch. Additionaly, there are over 35,000 ATMs nationwide available for cash withdraws and deposits, including over 300 Xtend Shared Branches throughout Michigan.
Peters seeks to give back to the community with any chance presented.
“We’ve found that traditional marketing doesn’t always reach current and potential members in the same way that sponsoring community-driven events and charitable activities do, so we prefer to utilize our marketing budget to make a direct community impact and bolster Michigan Legacy’s repuation as an engaged civic participant that is living the credit union difference. I applaud the Michigan Credit Union League for presenting CU Kind Day as another opportunity to give back,” Peters said.
