Troy, Mich.—August 7, 2019 —The Michigan Center for TMJ and Sleep Wellness is pleased to announce the availability of the K-Laser therapy for TMJ disorders.  TMD stands for the temporomandibular joint disorders, broadly referred to as “TMJ” – a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement and send frustrated patients seeking relief.  The announcement was made by Jeffrey S. Haddad, DDS, who founded the Michigan Center for TMJ and Sleep Wellness in 2013.

Dr. Haddad is the first Michigan dentist to use the K-Laser for this purpose, according to Joel King of K-Laser USA. The K-Laser is an FDA-cleared therapeutic treatment that manages pain and inflammation while accelerating tissue regeneration. It is a drug free, surgery free solution that relieves headaches, jaw pain, and increases range of motion. Like laser therapy used for other conditions, when used to treat TMJ the K-Laser increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen and nutrients to the damaged area and creating an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness and pain.

Dr. Haddad was also one of the first dentists in Michigan to offer a comprehensive approach to treating the myriad symptoms of TMJ.  When a person’s bite is not in proper alignment and balance with the muscles and joints, a TMJ disorder can occur. This can happen early on in life or, more commonly, as individuals age and their teeth and bite start to change or wear down.  TMJ can also be triggered or aggravated by a traumatic event such as a car accident. In conjunction with laser therapy, Dr. Haddad uses sophisticated computerized jaw tracking equipment and muscle relaxation techniques utilizing a TENS machine to determine a patient’s optimal bite. This progressive approach to treating TMD has patients getting relief predictably and more efficiently than ever before.

“TMJ is a complex condition that has its treatment roots in dentistry, even though symptoms such as ear-ringing and ear congestion, headaches and migraines, jaw-clicking, neck pain and interrupted sleep often have patients turning to a variety of other health providers first before finding relief with dental therapies,” Haddad said, adding that he has had patients referred to him from ENT physicians, primary care physicians, chiropractors and even neurologists. “The addition of the K-Laser is another modality to effectively eliminate or lessen the pain of TMD faster, using technology in combination with neuromuscular dentistry.”

The K-Laser treatment generally takes four to eight minutes and is used in a series of treatments which vary in number based on the patient’s particular needs.

“Many patients come to me because they are suffering with the daily pain that has diminished the joy in their life. For most patients, there’s no reason they have to continue struggling with pain related to TMJ,” Dr. Haddad said. “We are in an era of dental treatment where a variety of technology tools and clinical and therapeutic approaches can truly help dentists educated in advanced dentistry bring relief and renewed quality of life to our patients.”

Using neuromuscular dentistry, which focuses not only on teeth but jaw positioning, jaw muscles and even posture, Dr. Haddad has also successfully treated patients who have Meniere’s disease, a condition with symptoms similar to TMJ.  The condition was in the news last year when rock and roll singer Huey Lewis announced he had to cancel his concert schedule indefinitely due to hearing loss from Meniere’s disease.
