ROCHESTER, Michigan – May 7, 2013 – MedNetOne Health Solutions (MNOHS), a Michigan-based healthcare management organization serving the infrastructure and clinical support needs of primary and specialty care private practice physicians and behavioral health specialists, will begin a new session of its R-Team program on June 17.

Developed in 2007, R-Team (Reshaping thru Exercise, Attitudes and Meals) aims to ensure that kids and teens, along with their families, receive lifestyle training and education that empowers them to use positive self-management skills to live a healthier life. Kids aged eight and older with a BMI (body mass index) percentile greater than 85 percent are eligible to participate in the R-Team program.

R-Team is designed to promote healthy lifestyles for the whole family through a series of ten 90-minute group sessions. Sessions are comprised of interactive educational games as well as instruction on incorporating exercise, healthy food choices and positive body image into everyday life.

The program also offers participants:

  • Education on meal planning and portion control
  • Tips for grocery shopping success
  • Fun activities on choosing healthy snacks and beverages
  • Group fitness education with an exercise specialist at every session
  • Discussions on self-esteem and body image
  • Support from the participants’ team of dietitians, exercise specialists and wellness coaches
  • Encouragement in a judgment-free setting
  • Motivation and goal setting skills for making healthy lifestyle changes that last

Erin Olsen, an exercise specialist and certified wellness practitioner with MedNetOne Health Solutions, says R-Team provides an emotionally safe and positive environment for children and families struggling to make healthy lifestyle choices.

“R-Team is fun! Participants are active, taste new foods and meet new friends. There is a shared goal and motivation to learn how to make lifestyle changes now for a healthier future,” said Olsen. “While pediatricians often refer patients for the specialized support services R-Team offers, families can come to us directly as well.”

The next R-Team program begins June 17 and runs through Dec. 9. Group sessions are held every other Monday from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at the Practice Transformation Institute Physician Training Center at 26550 John R Rd., Madison Heights, Mich. Prior to the group sessions, each child will have a 30-minute individual assessment with the nurse, dietitian, exercise specialist and wellness coach from R-Team. Participants must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver at all sessions. To learn more about R-Team or to sign up, please email eolsen@miteam.org or call 248-475-4844.
