Birmingham, Mich. –June 5, 2018 – Jerome P. Pesick, managing shareholder of Steinhardt Pesick & Cohen, P.C., a Michigan-based law firm specializing in eminent domain and condemnation, land use, commercial property tax appeals and commercial real estate litigation, was among those attorneys honored by the Oakland County Bar Association (OCBA) on the occasion of the 40-year anniversary of their admittance to the State Bar of Michigan. The recognition took place at the 84th Oakland County Bar Association Annual Meeting, held at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham on June 4, 2018.
Possessing 40 years’ experience in eminent domain law, Pesick has successfully represented clients in major condemnation projects including: Poletown, Detroit’s Waterfront Reclamation and Casino Redevelopment Project, Comerica Park and Ford Field, I-696, M-59 (Hall Road), M-5 (Haggerty Connector), Northwestern Connector, Van Dyke Highway, Detroit Metropolitan Airport Expansion, Wayne State University Welcome Center, Wayne County Pinnacle AeroPark, Orchard Lake Road Widening and Ypsilanti’s Water Street Redevelopment, along with numerous other highway projects and class actions. He is currently actively representing several Detroit businesses who have been displaced as a result of the building of the Gordie Howe International Bridge.
Pesick was lead counsel on behalf of the property owners in the largest eminent domain verdict in Michigan history, rendering $25 million in a case that involved a 6.3-acre parcel on the Detroit River with an original government offer of $13.7 million. He also regularly represents clients in major property tax appeal cases concerning all types of business properties including commercial, office, industrial, agricultural, mixed-use, and vacant land.
Pesick has received numerous legal honors throughout his career. He has been included in The Best Lawyers in America® list each year since 2007 in the category of eminent domain and condemnation law and received eminent domain and condemnation ‘Lawyer of the Year’ regional honors in 2018, 2016, 2014 and 2011. Additionally, he is a multiple Michigan Super Lawyers honoree.
Pesick is a member of the American Bar Association’s Section on Litigation–Committee on Condemnation, Zoning, and Land Use; the State Bar of Michigan Sections on Litigation and Real Property Law, having previously served as the chair of the Real Property Law Section in 2009-2010 and as Chair of its Eminent Domain Committee for seven years. He is also a member of the Section’s State and Local Taxation Committee. Pesick is the former associate editor of the University of Detroit’s Journal of Urban Law and has authored numerous articles on eminent domain. He is also a sought-after speaker, instructor and lecturer at state and national eminent domain conferences.
Pesick’s civic activities include serving on the Executive Committee at Large of Adat Shalom Synagogue in Farmington Hills, and as a past board member of the National Bone Marrow Transplant Link and the Karmanos Cancer Institute.
Pesick received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Detroit Law School, and is a graduate of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with distinction.
