Troy, Mich.—September 10, 2019—Jeffrey S. Haddad, DDS, founder of the Michigan Center for TMJ and Sleep Wellness,  was a guest lecturer for the Myotronics Continuing Education series in Chicago on September 6 and 7, 2019.  Dr. Haddad spoke to 45 dentists and their practice team members on Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) treatment and the successful integration of sleep into a dental practice. It is estimated that 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, with more than 80% of moderate to severe cases going undiagnosed. The class also incorporated TMD (temporomandibular joint disorders), broadly referred to as “TMJ” – a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement.

Dr. Haddad’s course elements included:

  • How to recognize the significant interrelationship of airway, TMD and sleep disorders
  • Protocols for effective screening, examination and identification of OSA signs and symptoms
  • Using advanced technology for proper OSA and airway diagnosis and treatment
  • How to recognize and manage TMD and sleep breathing disorders

A frequent speaker and guest lecturer throughout the U.S., Dr. Haddad is one of the first dentists in Michigan to offer a comprehensive, neuromuscular dentistry approach to treating the myriad symptoms of TMJ.  In August, it was announced that he is the first Michigan dentist to offer the K-Laser, an FDA-cleared therapeutic treatment that manages pain and inflammation of TMJ while accelerating tissue regeneration. It is a drug free, surgery free solution that relieves headaches, jaw pain, and increases range of motion. Like laser therapy used for other conditions, when used to treat TMJ, the K-Laser increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen and nutrients to the damaged area and creating an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness and pain.

“TMJ is a complex condition that has its treatment roots in dentistry, even though symptoms such as ear-ringing and ear congestion, headaches and migraines, jaw-clicking, neck pain and interrupted sleep often have patients turning to a variety of other health providers first before finding relief with dental therapies,” Haddad said. “The addition of the K-Laser is another modality to effectively eliminate or lessen the pain of TMD faster, using technology in combination with neuromuscular dentistry.”

Using neuromuscular dentistry, which focuses not only on teeth but jaw positioning, jaw muscles and even posture, Dr. Haddad has also successfully treated patients who have Meniere’s disease, a condition with symptoms similar to TMJ.
