Rochester, Mich. —June 24, 2013 – Rochester Rotary, a member club of Rotary International, a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service and encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, announces the appointment of a new president and two new board members for the 2013-2014 Rotary year.
Jay Eastman, M.D., was appointed the club’s new president for the coming Rotary year that begins on July 1; departing president is Cary Riggs, who will remain on the board as immediate past president. Also appointed to the board are Stan Surratt as treasurer, Cyndee Andrews as leader of charities and Steve Schettenhelm as board member at large. Departing board members are Karen Lewis, immediate past president and Timo Nicholaou, board member at large.
“It was an honor to serve as Rochester Rotary club president and I want to thank my fellow Rotarians for giving their energy and resources to help make our club successful,” said Riggs. “I am pleased to pass on the duties as president to Dr. Eastman. He exemplifies our motto of service above self and will continue to lead our club in the right direction.”
Dr. Eastman has been a member of the Rochester Rotary club since 2000. A long-time Rochester Hills resident, Dr. Eastman is a practicing pediatrician in Birmingham and Chesterfield Township and previously practiced in Rochester.
Dr. Eastman will begin the Rotary year by joining approximately 20,000 other Rotarians from around the world at the Rotary International Conference in Lisbon, Portugal from June 23-26.
“I look forward to serving as president of the Rochester Rotary club,” said Dr. Eastman. “To begin my term at the International Conference will be the perfect opportunity to meet fellow Rotarians from around the world and learn of other service projects we can bring back to our local community. It will be exciting to see the global impact and commitment of service rotary has.”
Dr. Eastman will be accompanied to Lisbon by his wife and fellow Rotarian, Linda Eastman, who will be a panel member at the conference during a break-out session titled “Focus on Maternal and Child Health.” Mrs. Eastman will discuss a midwife training program she and Dr. Eastman implemented two years ago in rural Guatemala called ‘Helping Babies Breathe/Childbirth Emergencies’. Fluent in Spanish, Mrs. Eastman took a baby training course after visiting the area in prior years and seeing a need for midwife training. She will discuss how Helping Babies Breathe/Childbirth Emergencies was developed and the challenges and solutions of teaching midwifery skills to women who cannot read or write.
