Southfield, Mich. — Nov. 19, 2015 — Neil Rockind, founder of Southfield-based criminal defense law firm, Rockind Law, said the jury’s guilty verdict today in the trial of former Inkster police officer William Melendez is a reminder that police need to work within the confines of the law.

“Police offers are not above the law,” Rockind said. “This verdict is an important reminder of that fact. It also reinforces that juries, the backbone of our legal system, understand the limitations on police powers; when the police cross that line, juries will hold them accountable.”

Melendez was charged with misconduct in office, assault with intent to do great bodily harm and assault by strangulation in conjunction with a January 2015 traffic stop involving motorist Floyd Dent. He was found guilty on two counts, but not on the count of strangulation.
