ANN ARBOR – Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the U.S., announces Briana Emerson has joined the firm’s Ann Arbor office as a summer associate. In the position, Emerson assists with researching various patent issues, conducting prior art and patentability searches, preparing internet agreements and drafting letters regarding patent and trademark office actions.

As an undergraduate, Emerson developed a “Sure Shot Stability Arm,” for a prototype design course at the University of Detroit Mercy that incorporated all aspects of product design and was discussed by First Lady Michelle Obama at the University of Pennsylvania in 2012. She also developed a “Health Center Cart” in a mechanics of materials and machine design course that received a Canjar Design Award in 2011 for showing aptitude, motivation and effective participation in a design beneficial to society.

Emerson held previous positions as a law clerk for Price Heneveld in Grand Rapids, Mich., an intern at DTE Energy in Detroit, and a global sales and marketing intern at Rockwell Automation in Troy, Mich.

Emerson holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Detroit Mercy, where she graduated magna cum laude, served as treasurer of the Kappa Beta Gamma sorority and was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Emerson is currently enrolled in the Michigan State University School of Law, where she is on the Dean’s List. She is also the vice president of Delta Theta Phi, a member of the Intellectual Property Law Society and a member of the Women’s Law Caucus. Her expected graduation is May 2014.
