Ann Arbor, Mich. —July 11, 2017—Three attorneys from Brinks Gilson & Lione, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the U.S., were invited to present at an IP training event sponsored by the Intellectual Property Office of Jiangsu Province, a Provincial government entity that implements and enforces IP laws, leads the local IP law legislation and organizes IP services for local companies, together with the IP Office of Changzhou and Changzhou Bureau of Commerce, in Changzhou, Jiangsu, China, on June 9. The attorneys were Jon H. Beaupré, a shareholder and litigator in the Ann Arbor office, Jeffrey J. Catalano, a shareholder and litigator in the Chicago office, and Fei Hu, an associate and litigator in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office.

Before an audience of 250 general counsels and other in-house counsel attorneys, Beaupré discussed the importance and key issues of worldwide patent protection, while Catalano and Hu focused on U.S. IP protection and litigation.

Beaupré, Catalano, and Hu also traveled to Beijing to participate in the ninth China-US Intellectual Property Comparative Mock Trial at China’s State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) training center on June 15.  They conducted a mock trial of a fictionalized trade secret misappropriation litigation in a United States District Court presided by The Honorable Judge Virginia Kendall of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.  A team of law students from The John Marshall Law School served as the jury panel. Approximately 200 Chinese patent examiners, as well as a Chinese judge, and other Chinese IP professionals attended the mock trial.

Organized by The John Marshall Law School and sponsored by Brinks, the mock trial educated visiting John Marshall law students and members of the IP community, including representatives of private enterprise, law firms, universities, research institutes and the courts, about similarities and differences in practices within the two jurisdictions.
