Auburn Hills, MI—Avondale School District, an achievement-oriented learning community focused on student leadership and success in academics, the arts and athletics, urges parents to reach out to their legislators to vote no on Senate Bill 618, which would eliminate limits on the number of charter schools allowed in Michigan. Following is an excerpt of the letter sent to parents and friends in the Avondale Schools community today.

Dear Avondale School District Families,

Wednesday, November 30, 2011, your state representatives will vote on a plan that could have a devastating impact on public education in Michigan. Senate Bill 618 will remove all limits from the number of charter schools in our state. Why does that matter?

  • It will take already limited funding away from the Avondale School District and every other district in Michigan.
  • It will mean fewer resources for our students and more of your tax dollars going to charter schools with unproven records.
  • It will impact Avondale School District’s ability to continue some of the exemplary programs we are able to provide for your child.

For-profit school companies, many from out of state, are lobbying your representative to pass this bill and others like it. We need our families to stand up and say NO.

Please consider adding your voice AGAINST Senate Bill 618. Tell your senators and representatives that you value your child’s education in the Avondale School District. Tell them NOT to allow unlimited charter schools. Tell them this is the wrong choice for our kids’ future.

The vote is expected to be very close. Your actions may make the difference in stopping this legislation.

Below is contact information for your elected officials. Please do not delay – EMAIL and CALL your senators and representatives today. Testimony is taking place today and tomorrow and the Legislature is expected to vote immediately following.

Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,

george-signature
George C. Heitsch, Ed.D.
