ANN ARBOR – Briana Emerson has joined the Ann Arbor office of Brinks Gilson & Lione as an associate attorney. She served as a summer associate with Brinks, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the U.S., in 2013. Emerson is one of nine new associates hired firm-wide to support the growing demand for Brinks’ intellectual property law expertise.
Prior to joining Brinks as a summer associate, Emerson gained experience in patent law at a Grand Rapids, Mich.-based law firm and in mechanical engineering through internships at DTE Energy in Detroit and Rockwell Automation in Troy.
Emerson received her J.D., magna cum laude, in 2014 from Michigan State University College of Law, where she was on the Dean’s List every semester and received the Jurisprudence Achievement Award for both her Licensing Intellectual Property and Patent Application Preparation courses. She was also the vice president of Delta Theta Phi, a member of the Intellectual Property Law Society and a student member of the Michigan Intellectual Property Inn of Court. Emerson holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Detroit Mercy, where she graduated magna cum laude, and was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
As an undergraduate, Emerson developed a “Sure Shot Stability Arm,” for a prototype design course at the University of Detroit Mercy that incorporated all aspects of product design and was discussed by First Lady Michelle Obama at the University of Pennsylvania in 2012. She also developed a “Health Center Cart” in a mechanics of materials and machine design course that received a Canjar Design Award in 2011 for showing aptitude, motivation and effective participation in a design beneficial to society.
