Auburn Hills, Mich. —March 4, 2014—- Avondale School District, an achievement-oriented learning community focused on student leadership and success in academics, the arts and athletics, announces Anna Haritos, a senior at Avondale High School, has been awarded the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Class A Scholar-Athlete award. She was recognized for her academic achievements and athletic accomplishments in cross country and track and field. Anna is the daughter of Demetris and Angeliki Haritos of Troy. She plans to attend the University of Michigan in the fall as a pre-med student with a major in chemistry and minor in classical studies/Modern Greek.
Anna will be honored at a special ceremony during halftime of the Class C boys basketball championship on Saturday, March 22 at the Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing.
“We congratulate Anna for her dedication to athletics and academics,” said Avondale Superintendent, Dr. George Heitsch. “Her leadership on the field and in the classroom sets a wonderful example for other student athletes at Avondale.”
The MHSAA Scholar-Athlete award is sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance. Marking its 25 anniversary for the 2013-2014 school year, 32 $1,000 scholarships are awarded to high school seniors that meet the following eligibility requirements:
• Are enrolled in and an active participant in interscholastic athletics at an MHSAA member school
• Are seniors graduating during the 2013-2014 school year
• Have won a varsity letter prior to senior year in which the MHSAA sponsors post-season tournaments. These sports include: baseball, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls bowling, girls competitive cheer, boys and girls cross country, football, boys and girls golf, girls gymnastics, ice hockey, boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls soccer, softball, boys and girls skiing, boys and girls swimming and diving, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls track and field, girls volleyball and wrestling.
• Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
The Scholar-Athlete awards are presented proportionately by school classification, with 12 scholarships awarded to Class A student-athletes, six female and six male; eight scholarships awarded to Class B student-athletes, four female and four male; six scholarships awarded to Class C student-athletes, three female and three male; and four scholarships awarded to Class D student-athletes, two female and two male. The final two scholarships are awarded at-large to minority recipients, regardless of school size. Avondale is a Class A school.
